Four Mile Historic Park covers 55 acres of land in Southwest Denver and is the oldest operating public park in the city. The park was originally established in 1859 as Harvey Park, named for Samuel J. Harvey, a local rancher who gave the land to the city. After the land was given to the city, it was initially used as a cemetery for the burial of the dead from the Civil War. In 1876, it was renamed the Hill Cemetery, and remained as such until 1895 when it was converted into a park. From that time until 1997, it was known as the South Denver Cemetery. The current name of the park recognizes its connection to Denver’s four-mile house, which was the beginning of Denver’s residential neighborhoods. This was located two miles away from the park, and many of the trees and original buildings at the park date back to its original 1876 period.
