BMW car keys have evolved over many years, but in the last 25 years there have been a significant amount of changes. BMW was using a typical metal key on all of its cars first, however as time went on they switched to high security transponder keys. These high security transponder keys started getting used by BMW in 1998 and are still being used today. The newer BMW models are now using a smart remote key fobs that allow for keyless entry and push to start ignitions.
BMW Smart keys were one of the first in the car industry that allowed for keyless entry and keyless push to start. BMW has a greatly designed smart key with buttons to unlock only the driver door or it can unlock all four doors at the same time. These high tech smart BMW key fob also has a panic button and a button to unlock the trunk. Your BMW keys are battery operated and therefore will need the battery changed once the battery dies. However this will not require reprogramming the key again so simply changing the battery and you’re good to go!
BMW cars started using high security transponder keys in 1998 which contain a chip inside that must be programmed in order for the car to turn on. These BMW high security transponder keys are laser cut and the chip is programmed directly to communicate with one specific car.
